Grooming Process
The Pleasant Groom Pet Groomers will take all reasonable care to ensure the safety and well-being of your dog during the grooming process.
There may be some circumstances, when the groomer may be unable to complete the groom as requested such as excessive matting, aggressive behaviour or medical issues arising during the grooming process. In such cases, the Pleasant Groom Pet Groomers will contact you to discuss options and any additional charges that may apply.
You, understand that even with the upmost care, minor nicks or scratches may occur during grooming. Particularly with matted fur or dogs that are restless.
The Pleasant Groom Pet Groomers and its associates will not be held responsible for any loss of personal items during the appointment. Whilst every care is taken with the pets when being groomed, any pet left within the Pleasant Groom Pet Groomers is left entirely at the owner’s risk.
You must inform the groomer of any medical conditions and may be asked for a letter from your vet stating your pet is healthy to be groomed before the groom is carried out.
Matting
I / We understand that Matt (short for “matted fur”) refers to tangled clumps of fur in a dog’s coat. These occur when loose fur gets wrapped around itself and traps more fur over time. Here is what mats can do to a dog’s coat.
It can result in:
Discomfort and Pain: Mats can pull on a dog’s skin, causing irritation and pain.
Skin Problems: Mats trap moisture and prevent air circulation, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus which can lead to infections underneath, which could be raw and inflamed. Matted coats will not dry properly and can lead to rotting fur and skin. Due to matting, your dog’s hair might need to be shaved extremely short to the skin. This may show signs of skin irritations and sores which has been caused by the matting and continually wet undercoat and dirty coat.
Hidden Issues: Mats can hide fleas, ticks, maggot’s, grass seeds and other skin problems making it harder to diagnose and treat them.
Body Heat Regulation Issues: A thick matted coat can make it difficult for a dog to regulate its body temperature, especially in hot weather.
The grooming required will be to ensure your pet is as comfortable as possible and ensure that your pet’s grooming experience is as stress free as possible. Due to the condition of your dog’s coat, it may be determined that the kindest and most humane option is to remove the dogs coat completely. This will be a short clip, removing all the matting. Where feasible, we will work to de-mat/ brush out the dog’s coat, but only when it would not cause excessive pain and suffering to attempt to do so.
As Groomers we follow The Animal Welfare Act (2006), which applies directly to matted fur situations.
Protection from Suffering: The Act states animals must be protected from pain, injury, suffering, and disease (Section 5). Since matted fur can cause discomfort, pain, and even skin infections, it falls under this protection.
Groomers’ Responsibility: Under the Act, groomers cannot perform procedures that cause unnecessary suffering. This includes spending hours painfully de-matting a severely neglected coat.
Shaving Might Be Necessary: If the matting is severe, the most humane option according to the Act might be to shave the coat entirely, even if the owner prefers otherwise.
Animal Welfare: The Act prioritizes the animal’s well-being. This means groomers may refuse service or recommend veterinary intervention for extreme matting cases
There is a strong chance that your pets skin will become irritated during the clipping process. We will use a sensitive shampoo to help soothe any irritation that may occur. The matted hair rest tightly against the skin, the only way of removing mats is to use a short blade to clip between the skin and the mats.
Your dog might be nicked and cut due to having to work so closely to the skin to remove the matted coat. We will be incredibly careful, but the possibility of injury does exist. Understanding these risks and by signing our check in form, The Pleasant Groom Pet Groomers is authorized to proceed with the de-matting process.
We will be happy to show you how to care for your pet’s coat so that matting does not re-occur. We will also be happy to recommend the best equipment for you to use.
By completing our release form you hereby release The Pleasant Groom pet groomers any liability associated with the above-mentioned process and any/all medical problems that may be uncovered and/or occur during the stripping and de-matting process. Should your pet need veterinary care after or during the process, you agree to pay any/all associated veterinary fees. A charge for the removal of matts will be added to your fee starting from £20 due to the extra time and wear on our equipment.
Pregnant
I / we understand there are several reasons why grooming a pregnant dog might not be the best idea. Pets which are pregnant will not be accepted. The groomer has the right to refuse the groom if a dog is in season or has recently been mated.
This can cause Stress: Pregnancy can be stressful for dogs, and the unfamiliar environment, handling, and noises at a groomer’s can add to that stress. This stress can be harmful to both the mother and the puppies.
Limited Techniques: Groomers typically use restraint straps and some equipment like high-powered dryers that aren’t safe for pregnant dogs. This limits what they can effectively do during a grooming session.
Unpredictable Behaviour: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make a dog act differently. They might be more irritable or anxious, making grooming difficult and potentially risky for both the dog and the groomer.
New Products: Groomers often use shampoos, conditioners, and other products that may not be safe for pregnant dogs. It is best to avoid introducing anything new during pregnancy unless your vet specifically approves it.
Please ensure that your pet has been given the opportunity to be relieved before they enter the grooming salon. This will ensure that they get the maximum enjoyment out of their groom.
